  • Scarification | Greenergardens

Scarification Every lawn has a build up of naturally occurring material known as thatch. This thatch layer if not kept in check can inhibit your lawn’s intake of nutrients, air and water; thereby affecting the growth and quality of your lawn. A heavily thatched lawn will also encourage the spread of moss and weeds. Scarification is the process of ‘dethatching’ your lawn , using a powered machine to pull out layers of thatch along with moss from your lawn. Scarifying your lawn will also prune the grass to encourage thicker growth. After scarification, your lawn will take some time to recover; usually around 4-6 weeks, depending on aftercare and weather conditions. The heavier the thatch layer removed, the longer this process will take. That is why it is highly recommend to scarify your lawn yearly, to maintain a happy, healthy lawn. Light Scarification Every Scarification is at least double passed. Heavier thatched lawns will receive extra passes. Debris is collected leaving your lawn free to breathe. • Dry Weather Advice | Greenergardens

Dry Weather Advice During prolonged periods of hot and dry weather, your lawn will suffer in the long term if you don’t give it the correct care it needs during a drought. You may notice your lawn starting to brown and growth slowing , these are the first signs that your lawn is already suffering. Growth may even stop completely and eventually you could end up with a very worn and patchy looking lawn. In severe drought, your lawn may actually appear “dead”, however with the correct care; it can often be brought back to life. Known as the ‘Lazarus plant’, grass has the ability to be resurrected with the new season’s rainfall. To avoid your lawn reaching this ‘dead’ stage, below are a few useful tips to help keep your lawn looking green: Mowing With a well established lawn, correct mowing techniques will help relieve stress and mean a lot less work with the garden hose to keep moisture in your lawn. At the first sign of hot and dry weather, it is advisable to raise the height of your lawnmower if possible, this provides more leaf and a larger plant to keep reserves for when it is needed. Another step you can take when the lawn is barely growing, is to leave the box off your mower (if this is possible), not collecting grass clippings, but rather leaving them will act as a mulch and slow evaporation from the ground. Take care however to only leave SMALL clippings , if you are mowing weekly this will be fine, however, leaving larger clippings on the lawn will cause more damage than good. Watering Always water your lawn during the cooler parts of the day , the best time to water is early in the morning as evening watering during warm/humid conditions risk leading to fungal infections such as Red Thread. However, if evening is the only chance you have to water, then by all means do it then, it is more important to maintain the moisture levels in your lawn than to not do anything at all. New lawns/Renovated Lawns; Provided there is no water ban. New lawns will need more regular watering than established lawns, aim to be watering your newly seeded areas between two to four times daily , aiming to keep the surface as moist as possible at all times will encourage quicker germination. Do not give up when the seeds are germinating, at this stage especially they will need a continued supply of water to become established. Continue watering daily, not allowing the ground to dry out. If your lawn has been recently laid, then watering daily is imperative to ensure the joints knit together and don't shrink or dry out. Give your newly turfed lawn a deep watering to encourage rooting twice a day , for around 30 minutes each time . Established Lawns; If you follow the mowing advice above , then an established lawn can survive happily with a deep watering 2/3 times a week during the summer months. Leave a sprinkler on the lawn, covering all areas for between 30 minutes to an hour . This will encourage the roots of the plant deeper down, therefore giving you a stronger lawn to cope with the dry period.

  • FAQ | Greenergardens

FAQ Take a look at some of our advice sheets and frequently asked questions FAQ & Advice My lawn looks like it's suffering from drought, what should I do? We have a detailed help sheet for this one - take a look Why is my lawn turning yellow? Your lawn turning yellow is often the first warning sign for a lot of potential problems. Here at Greener Gardens we believe that the key to solving any lawn problem is to identify the root cause. When it comes to a yellowing lawn, here are a few of the possibilities: Lawn pests, drought, lack of nutrients, compaction, thatch levels, disease, poor drainage, chemical damage and improper mowing to name a few. Fortunately we pride ourselves on identifying problems and implementing best practice for your property My lawn is full of weeds, what should I do? Lawns can become overrun with weeds for several reasons such as an incorrect ph level in the soil, mowing height or heavy compaction. More often than not, it is due to improper lawn care practices where invasive weeds have not been dealt with. At Greener Gardens we use a pet friendly weed treatment to ensure that your lawn stays all grass all year. I have a lawn with poor drainage, what can I do? New build lawns and clay based soils often have issues with drainage. A great help for drainage is to have the lawn aerated regularly and use a soil improver to help water move more freely through the soil. My lawn is full of moss, how can I fix it? The first thing you should look at is your cutting height, the grass should always be longer than the moss to help the turf compete it. We always treat our lawns with a turf tonic that kills moss and we recommend regular aeration and scarification to keep moss at bay. Will lawn fertilizer kill my dog? In short, no. All of our products are pet and child friendly with aftercare instructions to ensure that pets and family are kept safe and your grass remains lush. Are the mushrooms in my lawn poisonous? Out of the 400 species of mushrooms that have been previously found in lawns, none have been poisonous. However, this does not mean that the mushrooms in your lawn are safe for you or your pets. The best course of action is to remove the food source of the mushrooms by clearing any sticks or logs that the fungi might be growing on. Mushrooms thrive in shady, poorly drained areas so keep bushes trimmed back and the lawn well drained. Pull the mushrooms out from the base and dispose of them or consider a fungicide for bigger infestations. Can lawn mowers cut wet grass? That depends on how good your mower is but if it is boggy underfoot then definitely don't cut. It is generally fine to cut with some moisture underfoot as long as your mower isn't dropping clippings How long should my grass be This all depends on the species of grass in your lawn. Most UK lawns are comprised of dwarf perennial ryegrass which is best kept between 25-45mm

Government advice states the following: "Only leave your house to go to work if you absolutely cannot work from home" "If you go out, stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people at all times" "Work carried out in people’s homes, can continue...maintaining a 2 metre distance from any household occupants...No work should be carried out in any household which is isolating" https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others/full-guidance-on-staying-at-home-and-away-from-others#going-to-work Therefore with this advice in mind, I am continuing working as a lone worker, using my own tools and equipment, observing social distancing measures by having no face to face contact with customers. Customers will be contacted electronically and payments can be made in the same manner. I ask please that if your household is self isolating due to experiencing symptoms, that you make it clear and your appointment will be rearranged. Confirmation Expect to receive confirmation of your visit as usual, via E-mail / Text Message, this will inform you of the date of your appointment and ask for access to the lawn/s to be provided. • Renovation | Greenergardens

Lawn Renovation WHAT TO EXPECT The above information demonstrates how our lawn renovation process works and how we get the most out of your lawn. The first stage of the renovation is to begin to control the weeds and ensure that fertiliser levels are sufficient for a speedy recovery. We then aerate the lawn using the necessary tines to improve drainage, relieve compaction and aid root development. Scarification is the next step to remove as much thatch as possible from the lawn. We rake up all debris to leave a great surface for overseeding. Next we overseed with our bespoke grass seed blend and top dress with the best product on the market. A soil improver / fertiliser that suits your soil type is used to aid recovery. We then return 3-4 weeks later to complete the first cut of your newly renovated lawn.

A liquid lawn tonic is applied to your lawn to build resistance from disease attack over the winter and into next spring. This treatment will also work to weaken the moss in your lawn and limit further spread throughout the damp winter months. For more help dealing with moss in your lawn see Aeration and Scarification . Late Summer Feed When? July - September What? This controlled release feed will continue to gradually feed your lawn during the late summer months. As water is becoming increasingly sparse, this product will break down slowly as water is made available, encouraging good growth and colour late on into the heat of the summer. Where needed your technician will spot spray for any stubborn lawn weeds appearing later in the year.
